Protecting Your Songs!

As songwriters, we all take pride when we've had an idea for a melody, lyric or music and see it all come together into a great song!

But, even after you've recorded it, there's one more step you should take.
That step - and it's a very important one - is to make certain that it's protected. You can do this through copyright.

What is copyright?
Well, let's just say that it's - in a sense - the birth certificate for your song.

The process of copyright involves the legal protection of original works which gives you exclusive rights to reproduce, perform and distribute the work.

To get things started, go to the copyright section of http://www.copyright.gov/ .
Look for the form that fits your needs best, then download it.

I use the SR form - for sound recordings on tape or CD - to submit a collection of songs.
The cost per registration is $45 offline and $35 for online registration.

Protecting your song(s) through copyright allows you to have the upperhand should you need to protect your work in court if someone infringes upon your copyright.

So, be sure to explore the copyright website I provided for you above to learn more about this important process. You'll be glad you did!

Thanks 4 spending some time with CJack's MusiQuarium!

An Introduction!

Hello everyone, I'm Charles "CJack" Jackson, president/owner of CJack Run Enterprises and Syracuse Unversity Newhouse alum.
Welcome to the newly launched CJack's MusiQuarium!
Before we get into the groooove of things here - let me first introduce myself to you all!
I'm the creator and executive producer of the award-winning TV show - "CJack Run Presents..." which first took to the airwaves in March of 2007 - airing 9:30 p.m . Wednesday nights on Time-Warner Cable Ch. 98 in Upstate New York (Syracuse, Auburn, etc.) with highlights available Worldwide online via CJack Run TV
and also linked to Clear Channel's Power 106.9.

Approximately 75 students from Syracuse University and LeMoyne college along with members of the community are on board helping with the show and CJack's MusiQuarium. Our ultimate goal for the show is to create a Worldwide platform for up-and-coming talent creatively and technically and to allow experimentation to lead the way.

I currently produce music for film and television - currently producing music for MTV shows such as "Parental Control" "Pimp My Ride," "Date My Mom," "Next," "My Own," etc. I have also scored 7 independent films, one of which - "Divided We Stand" - was placed in the Independent Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame.

CJack Run has been featured in Right On! Magazine and has won several music and community awards. Some of the awards include a songwriting award from Billboard and 5 SAMMYS (Syracuse's version of the Grammys). CJack Run holds the record for the most wins in one competition.
On the literary side: I'm also a music columnist for the Rochester-based - nationally distributed - About Time Magazine and have been a long-time writer/editor for Syracuse's Post-Standard - where I wrote a music technology column - KeyNotes - for 7 years.
In the very near future you will find the inaugural entries for CJack's MusiQuarium - an interactive online magaine - with a variety of writers including yours truly - that will consists of a combination of columns/blogs and all kinds of stuff relating to music technology (online contests, etc), music reviews, music tips/advice (copyright, ASCAP), profiles, our TV show and much more!
We'd love for you to subscribe to CJack's MusiQuarium! And be sure to check back in the next few weeks/months! Or better yet look for it in your inbox if you choose to subscribe!
In the meantime check out CJack Run TV for some highlights from the award-winning "CJack Run Presents..."
